Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fourth Quarter Comeback Falls Short in Overtime

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage women's basketball team battled back in the fourth quarter to force overtime, before falling just short 51-45 against Carroll on Wednesday night at Tarble Arena.

Despite falling behind to open the game, the Firebirds (8-5, 3-2 CCIW) reclaimed the lead 5-4 on a layup from Bridget Barrett and three pointer by Ayanna Ester. By the end of the first quarter it was Carthage who led the Pioneers (10-3, 2-3 CCIW) 15-10. Carroll stepped out in front midway through the second quarter, before the Firebirds tied it at 18 on another three from Ester. However, Carthage would enter the locker rooms for halftime down 24-20.

Carroll continued to stretch their lead through the third period, entering the final 10 minutes to play down nine, 41-32. The Firebirds clawed their way back through an incredible defensive effort, holding the Pioneers to just two fourth-quarter points, while Nansy Velev hit a layup with seconds remaining to force an extra period. The visitors would go on to win however, as the Firebirds fell in their first home game of the new year after over a month on the road.

Carthage will look to bounce back this Saturday, January 8, when they host Illinois Wesleyan at 2 p.m. in Tarble Arena.
