Carthage Men’s Basketball Drops Double Overtime Thriller

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men's basketball fell in close competition to Millikin 75-72 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action Saturday afternoon at Tarble Arena.

Carthage (9-10, 2-8 CCIW) built a 10-2 lead in the first capped off by a layup from Nemi Ostojic. Millikin (11-8, 6-4 CCIW) responded tying it at 17 with a 15-7 run, and took a one-point lead off a lone free throw. Kyle Kostes added a pair of free throws cutting the deficit to 24-21 but the Big Blue controlled a 28-23 advantage heading into halftime. 

The Firebirds regained the lead in the second half with a three-pointer from Tyler Guest. Four lead changes and four ties happened over the next four minutes of play until a jumper from AJ Johnson made it a one-point game at 43-42 with 9:32 left. Later, a layup and free throw from Johnson gave Carthage control of the game at the 7:31 mark. After the visitors tied it at 50, back-to-back three-pointers from Garrett Horner and Johnson put the home team back in front. Another pair of threes from Horner extended the advantage to 10, but the Big Blue went on a 10-0 run to force overtime. 

Antuan Nesbitt gave Carthage a two-point lead with a layup in the first overtime. Though a driving layup from Fillip Bulatovic with 1:32 left made the score 66-64 in favor of Carthage, a turnaround jump shot for Millikin with eight seconds left forced a second overtime. 

Millikin went ahead 69-68 until Bulatovic hit another layup flipping the score to 70-69 in the second overtime. After a layup for the visitors put them back in control, Johnson hit a jump shot with 2:48 left. Then, Two free throws for the Big Blue gave them a 73-72 score. Carthage had two opportunities to tie or take the lead, but Millikin won 75-72. 

Next up, the Firebirds face No. 19 Elmhurst on Monday, January 30 at 7 p.m.

  • The Firebirds were led by Fillip Bulatovic, who had a game-high 21 points and grabbed a new season-best 17 rebounds. 
  • AJ Johnson added 13 points and five rebounds, while Garrett Horner had 12 points and two rebounds.
