Millikin Tops Carthage Women’s Basketball

KENOSHA, Wis. — Playing in their 10th game away from Tarble this season, the Carthage women's basketball team was unable to overcome the conference standings leader Millikin on Saturday, falling by a score of 62-42 at the Griswold Center.

The home team jumped out to a big lead, as the Firebirds (8-7, 3-4 CCIW) trailed by 20 after the first quarter of play. While Carthage was able to keep pace with the Big Blue (13-3, 7-0 CCIW) during the second period, they would remain behind at halftime by a score of 37-11.

In the third quarter, the Firebirds matched the home team behind seven points from Destiny Antoine, scoring 15 points compared to 15 from Millikin, but trailed heading into the final quarter. While Carthage outscored the Big Blue 16-10 in the final period, they would go on to fall by 20 points.

The Firebirds will look to bounce back at Elmhurst, when they take on the Bluejays next Wednesday, January 19 at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"We're in a bit of a funk where we're not getting off to good starts. Everything is on the table now, this is a good team that can play well. It was a great team for the whole month of December. We're 15 games into the season, there's tape everywhere, and there are good coaches in this league and they'll dissect it and try to take away what you do well, and that happened to us today. You try to get people to be consistent, and we haven't had a lot of that recently. We have to handle our adversity a little better. It's not easy to run your offense against good teams, they're going to be physical and challenge you and take things away from you."
