Carthage Women’s Volleyball Splits Final Day of Loras Tourney

DUBUQUE, Iowa — On the second day of the Loras Tournament, the No. 15 Carthage College women's volleyball squad started with a 3-0 sweep over St. Scholastica before concluding the tournament with a 3-2 loss to Dubuque. 

In game one, Carthage (9-5) jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start with back-to-back aces from Jenna Millen. Liv Carel struck a kill that put the Firebirds up 12-9 as Carthage used a 12-7 run to move the score to 24-16 as a final kill from Nicole Acton gave the Firebirds a one-set lead 25-18. 

St. Scholastica (0-3) turned the tables in set two with an 11-6 margin but Carthage responded by outscoring the Saints 19-9 as a kill from Leena Ajibola put the Firebirds up two sets 25-20. 

In the third, an ace from Haley Horner gave Carthage a 9-4 lead. Later in the set, an ace from Molly Skoda made it 19-12. St. Scholastica made a small 4-0 run late, shrinking the deficit to two; however, a final kill from Kasey Pfister sealed the sweep for Carthage 25-22. 

Dubuque (6-7) began the second game with an 11-9 advantage until the visitors battled back, tying it at 20 with a kill from Horner. The Firebirds took set one with a 5-2 run sparked by a final kill from Skoda. 

The Spartans again went out in front in the second with a 14-8 score until a 12-4 run for Carthage flipped the score to 20-18 with back-to-back attack errors by the home team. With the set locked at 22, Dubuque tied the game at one apiece with a block 25-23. 

It was a back-and-forth third until the Spartans gained an 18-14 lead but an ace from Horner tied it at 19. Dubuque responded with a 6-1 run winning the set 25-20. 

It was all Carthage in the fourth as a kill from Skoda put the visitors ahead 15-9, the Firebirds then outscored the Spartans 10-7 to force a fifth set 25-16. 

Each team traded point for point in the fifth as the score was even at 10. Though Carthage kept close with Dubuque, a final kill saw the Spartans win the match 15-12. 

The Firebirds stay on the road as they travel to face Augustana (Ill.) on Wednesday, September 22 at 7 p.m.

"We did some really good things this weekend. Our energy level and focus were much better this weekend. Our offense was really strong until the last three sets of the Dubuque match. A lot to grow from and we are excited to get back in the gym and prepare for Augie." 

Quick Facts

  • Haley Horner tallied 15 kills against St. Scholastica and 19 against Dubuque now has 730 career kills while at Carthage. 
  • For the eighth game this season, Aubree Bucheger finished with double-digit digs collecting 11 against St. Scholastica and 13 in game two.
  • Kathryn Shuty recorded 30 assists against Dubuque, three shy of her career-best. 
  • Molly Skoda had five aces in game two while Megan Dawrant added two. 
  • Skoda also hit .458 against Dubuque with 12 kills off 24 total attacks and one error.
