KENOSHA, Wis. — The No. 5 Carthage College women's volleyball team opened up the Carthage Invitational with a 3-0 victory over MSOE before falling to Bethel in the second 3-2 on Friday at Tarble Arena.

In game one, MSOE (2-3) started with a slim 7-5 advantage until back-to-back kills from Nicole Acton and Haley Horner tied it at seven. Later, another kill from Horner put Carthage (6-0) up 12-10. The visitors climbed back, tying the set at 17. With the set tied at 20, the Firebirds ended with a 5-2 run to take the set 25-22 with a final kill from Liv Carel

Carthage jumped out to an 8-2 margin in set two with two consecutive Raider attack errors. The home team went up 10 with a kill from Carel and took set two 25-15.

With the score even at 10 in the third, Carthage went ahead by two off a bad set. Later in the set, Molly Skoda added a kill pushing the Firebird lead to five at 18-13. The home collected the straight-set sweep with a final kill from Horner 25-18.

To begin the second match, the home team started with a 4-1 lead to start with a block from Leena Ajibola. Later, an attack error by Bethel (6-1) extended the Carthage difference to 11-7. After the Royals tied it at 14, Bethel used an 11-6 run to take the set 25-20.

The home team rebounded in the second with a fast 5-1 advantage sparked by back-to-back kills from Carel. Following a Royals service error, an ace from Skoda extended the lead to 12-7. Bethel battled back within two at 17-15 with a Royals kill. Both teams battled for momentum until Bethel won the marathon set 34-32.

Carthage went up two in the third until Bethel fought back to tie it at 18. An ace from Jenna Millen put the Firebirds in front 21-18 as the home team took the set 25-20.

Ajibola put Carthage ahead in the fourth 6-5 with a kill, but Bethel tied it at 10. Later, a kill from Nicole Acton gave the Firebirds a two-point lead 16-14. Though the Royals again got within one twice, a Bethel service error and a kill from Skoda forced a fifth set 25-23.

Bethel began the fifth with a quick 6-1 lead until Carthage fought back to get within two with a Royals service error. Though the Firebirds shrank the lead to four, Bethel won the game 15-10.

The volleyball squad wraps up day two of the Carthage Invite playing Wisconsin-Platteville at noon before facing No. 19 Wisconsin-Whitewater at 4 p.m.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"We opened up the night a little slow and struggled to serve aggressively and control the pass. But, we pick things up and finished strong against MSOE. We knew Bethel was a quality opponent. We struggled to get our offense going. We had too many hitting errors. We turned things around in sets three and four. Our block had an impact and we hit a better hitting percentage. The goal is to learn from our mistakes. I am looking forward to seeing how we respond tomorrow."
