Carthage Takes One of Two at North Park

CHICAGO — In a repeat of yesterday's doubleheader, the Carthage baseball team dropped game one today 17-6 before picking up a 9-7 win in game two of a double feature at North Park on Sunday at the Holmgren Athletic Complex.

In the first game of the day, Carthage (13-18, 8-15 CCIW) hit the run column first after Colton Klein drove in Cody Tostrud on a sacrifice fly. However, the Vikings (16-17, 11-16 CCIW) took the lead in the bottom of the frame, before scoring again in the fourth inning to take a 7-1 lead. While the Firebirds brought in runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, they were unable to catch up to North Park, falling by 11 in a seven inning game.

The home team struck first in the opening frame to take an early 1-0 lead on Carthage in game two. In the fourth inning, Carthage plated seven runs on a two-RBI single from Jake Cinelli, bases-loaded walk by Cody Phelps, and grand slam from catcher Drew Dyer. The Firebirds held their lead for the remainder of the game, adding insurance runs in the eighth on a Phelps homer, and ninth on an Austin Prybylinski RBI single, to take the victory.

Carthage will hit the road next and is scheduled to take on North Central in Naperville, Ill. on Wednesday, May 5 at 3 p.m.
