WHEATON, Ill. — The Carthage College softball team continued the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play on Saturday afternoon falling to Wheaton (Ill.) in game one 5-1 before taking game two in extra innings 6-5.

Wheaton (Ill.) (12-16, 9-13 CCIW) got on the board with a lone run in the first and four runs in the second to go ahead 5-0 in game one. Though Carthage (13-11, 10-9 CCIW) got a run in the sixth inning, the Thunder won 5-1.

In game two, Wheaton (Ill.) plated three runs in the second to go up 3-0 to start. Back-to-back doubles from Rylee Johnson and Maddie Conway shrank the deficit to one at 3-2. Carthage scored another run on a Thunder error to tie it at three. Sarah Bennett hit a single to right field allowed Ellie Bernero to score giving the Firebirds the lead 4-3. A flyout from Johnson in the six was deep enough to score Bella Spittler. Wheaton (Ill.) scored two in the seventh to tie it at five. A walk-off double from Naomi Alonzo in the bottom of the ninth won the game for Carthage 6-5.

The Firebirds return home facing Millikin on Sunday, April 25 starting at 12 p.m.

Quick Facts

The Firebirds had 14 hits in game two as three Firebirds had two hits: Donna Stevens and Rylee Johnson while Naomi Alonzo had three. Johnson also had two runs batted in in the game.
Maddie Conway, Johnson, and Izzy Hernandez each had a double in the game along with Alonzo tallying two.
Ellie Bernero struck out five batters in game two over nine innings of work.
