Firebirds Drop Pair of Road Games at Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — The Carthage College baseball team fell 12-6 and 4-3 in a road doubleheader at Augustana on Saturday afternoon.

The Firebirds (11-14, 6-12 CCIW) opened game one with a 4-0 deficit after the first three innings of play, before Colton Klein doubled to left and allowed Ben Levicki to come around and score. In the seventh, Carthage would score a pair of runs to get within three, 6-3, before Augustana (22-5, 14-5 CCIW) took a 12-3 lead by the end of the eighth. Carthage was able to score three runs in the final frame, but would fall in game one.

The home team would strike first again in game two of the day, plating a pair of runs in the second, before scoring in the third inning to make it 3-0. Augustana would tally one more run in the seventh frame to make it 4-0, before a three-run home run from Klein got the Firebirds within one in the eighth. Carthage was unable to manufacture a tying score however, dropping game two.

The Firebirds will finish up their three-game series with Augustana with a home game at Augie Schmidt Field, on Monday, April 26 at 3 p.m.

  • With a pair of two-hit ball games, Colton Klein pushed his hitting streak to 16 games, and is batting a team-high .407 on the season.
  • In game one, Cody Tostrud extended hit streak to an impressive 16 games, before coming to an end in game two.
  • In his last two starts for the Firebirds, Dante Guarascio has thrown 12 innings and only allowed one earned run, and now owns a 2.31 ERA on the season.
