Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Elmhurst

ELMHURST, Ill. — Beginning their three-game weekend series with Elmhurst on the road today, the Carthage baseball team dropped game one 11-4 before bouncing back with a 15-1 victory in game two on Friday afternoon at Butterfield Park.

The Carthage (7-6, 2-5 CCIW) bats jumped on the board first in the top of the first inning, as Cody Tostrud came in to score on a groundout by Johnny Belskis. However, Elmhurst (10-7, 6-5 CCIW) would respond in the bottom of the opening frame before going in front 9-1 through five innings. The Firebirds were unable to come back and would drop game one by seven.

Once again, Carthage struck first in the top of the first with a two-run home run by Bryce Prybylinski, before Colton Klein homered to left field in the third to make it 3-0. The Firebirds added two more in the fifth inning before a six-run sixth frame, highlighted by Prybylinski's second grand slam of the season to make it 11-1. Carthage added four more in the seventh inning to extend their final margin of victory to 14 runs.

The Firebirds return to Kenosha tomorrow, as game three of their weekend series with the Bluejays will take place at Augie Schmidt Field on Saturday, April 3 at 1 p.m.
