Firebird Offense Leads Carthage to Victory Over Millikin

KENOSHA, Wis. — Putting up 41 total points while holding their opponents to just 19, the Carthage College football team defeated Millikin on Saturday at Art Keller Field to remain the only undefeated team playing spring football in the conference.

Late in the first quarter, Carthage (2-0, 2-0 CCIW) jumped on the board first on a short pass from Billy Dury to Cole Vercelli, before Dury found Alex Jarvis minutes later to make it 13-0. After Millikin (2-1, 2-1 CCIW) evened the score midway through the second period, Eddie Ell III responded with a 94-yard kick return to give the Firebirds a lead they would hold the remainder of the game. A last-second rush by Dury into the endzone set the score in favor of the home team at halftime 27-13.

In the third quarter, Payden Lingle punched it into the endzone to cap off a 61-yard drive to increase the Carthage lead. Following a touchdown at the beginning of the final quarter, Millikin would score once more with five minutes remaining to set the final tally at 41-19 in favor of the Firebirds.

Head Coach Dustin Hass

"Call it what you want to call it, but we were the only team that played this spring season and ended it undefeated. I am extremely proud of everyone involved in the program. The coaches, the players, the training staff, everyone put in an incredible amount of work to make this year happen. I can't thank the senior class enough for their resiliency and leadership during a tough year. It shows that we have great people here at Carthage. We played a great game today to end a great season, and I am excited for the future of our football program!"
