Women’s Volleyball Collects Two Victories at IWU Tournament

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — The Carthage College women's volleyball team picked up a pair of College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) victories beating Illinois Wesleyan in game one 3-1 then winning against Millikin 3-2 at the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament at the Shirk Center.

The Firebirds, ranked No. 3 in the recent American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Coaches Poll, started the first set of game one with an 11-6 advantage with a kill from Nicole Acton. Later in the set, a kill from Autumn McGee extended the lead to 17-11. Though Illinois Wesleyan (5-3, 5-3 CCIW) got within two, a block from Andrea Kozak and Haley Horner and a Titans service error gave the set to the Firebirds 25-22.

Illinois Wesleyan came out fast in the second going up 18-11 until a 13-2 run for Carthage (11-1, 5-1 CCIW) flipped the score to 24-20. Acton connected on a kill which gave the Firebirds a two-set lead 25-22.

It was a back-and-forth third set as the game was locked at 10 however, the Titans gained control of the set with an ace and a kill. The Firebirds kept close to the home team tying it at 21 but the Titans won the set 25-22.

In the fourth, Carthage held a one-point margin with a block from Horner and Kozak. The Firebirds closed out the set with a 9-5 run winning the game 25-20.

During the second game of the day after No. 6 Millikin (6-3, 4-1 CCIW) took the first two games, Carthage began the third set up 13-6 with an ace from Horner. Though the Big Blue got within five at 22-18, two kills from Molly Skoda and Nicole Acton gave the set to the Firebirds 25-19.

It was a hard-fought fourth set as the game was locked at 20 until Millikin went ahead 22-20. Carthage responded with a 6-2 run to force a fifth set.

Both teams battled in the fifth as the Firebirds controlled an 8-7 margin with an ace from Skoda. The Big Blue got within one twice but Carthage held on to win the match 15-13.

Next up, the Firebirds stay on the road facing Wheaton (Ill.) on Friday, April 16 at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"Can't say enough about how resilient this team has been. Two really good opponents today and two gutsy wins!! They just find a way!! Molly Skoda has turned herself into a very good player!! It's been fun to watch her confidence grow every match! Haley Horner is always a big player for us as well. Aubree Bucheger had a great night taking care of the backrow. Jordyn Barrette and Kathryn Shuty mixed up the offense. Tonight was about this whole team and how bonded they have become!!"
