Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Firebirds Take Down Elmhurst 14-7 at Home

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men's lacrosse team defended their home turf in a conference matchup, as they defeated Elmhurst 14-7 at Art Keller Field on Wednesday night.

Elmhurst (8-3, 1-1 CCIW) would score the first two goals to begin the game, before Joe Poremba took the ball down the field and found Andrew Johnson to get Carthage (8-2, 2-1 CCIW) on the board. While the visitors scored once again, Noah Lindner retaliated to make it a 3-2 game by the end of the first quarter.

Johnson tied the game at three to begin the second period, before Michael Stell found Johnson for another goal minutes later to give the Firebirds the lead. Colin Poitras would extend their advantage, before back-to-back goals from freshman Connor Smith. Poitras found the back of the net once more with just over one minute left in the half, before Lindner added one more in the final seconds to set the scoreboard at 9-4 in favor of Carthage at halftime.

The two teams traded goals midway through the third quarter, with Elmhurst making it a three-point game, 10-7, with a minute remaining in the period. However, a George Burchfield goal with seconds before the final quarter helped the Firebirds hold the lead. Scoring three goals in the final 15 minutes of play while keeping the Bluejays out of the net, Carthage would go on to win by seven.

Up next, the Firebirds will hit the road on Saturday, April 17 for a match at North Central beginning at 1 p.m.

Head Coach David Neff

"That was a really great conference win. Elmhurst has had a great year and that is an exceptional lacrosse team. We had to kick off the rust there early, but once we settled down we were really locked in. We knew that this was a game that would be won in the box, and I felt like we out-matched them on both sides. That was a 'team' win tonight, and I am really proud of our guys. Unfortunately, we don't have anytime to enjoy it because we have a one-loss team in North Central next that we need to prepare for."
