Firebirds Defeat Illinois Wesleyan in Game One, Fall in Game Two

KENOSHA, Wis. — Beginning a three-game series with a doubleheader against Illinois Wesleyan, the Carthage College baseball team defeated the Titans 11-4 in game one, before falling in game two 5-3 on Sunday at Augie Schmidt Field.

The visiting Titans (11-10, 6-7 CCIW) were first to strike on the day, scoring a run in both the first and second innings of game one to take an early 2-0 lead. After Jim Mundo hit an RBI single to left field in the bottom of the second to put the Firebirds (10-8, 5-6, CCIW) on the board, the junior struck again in the bottom of the fourth with yet another run-scoring single. The rest of the Carthage lineup would jump in on the scoring party in the fourth inning, with RBI base hits from Cody Tostrud, Colton Klein, Ben Levicki, and Jake Cinelli making it an 8-2 game. The Firebirds would score yet again in the fifth and eighth innings, as Keith Kutzler threw a complete game and helped the home team secure an 11-4 victory.

Game two began as a pitcher's duel before Carthage cracked the scoring column in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run home run to opposite field by Bryce Prybylinski. The Titans would add one in the sixth and seventh innings to tie it at two, before Klein connected for an RBI single to right-center field to score Ryan Malek. However, the visitors would tie the game in the top of the eighth inning 3-3, and score twice in the ninth to split today's two games.

The two teams will look to claim the series tomorrow as game three is scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch at Augie Schmidt Field.
