Carthage Falls in Five at Elmhurst

ELMHURST, Ill. — The No. 2 Carthage College women's volleyball fell in close competition to Elmhurst 3-2 in the Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action on Tuesday at R.A Faganel Hall.

Carthage (2-1, 2-1 CCIW) began the game with an 8-4 score in the first until Elmhurst (3-0, 3-0 CCIW) got within one with a Firebirds attack error. A block from Haley Horner put Carthage up 14-12 however, the Bluejays responded with a 7-2 run flipping the score to 19-16. Though a kill from Nicole Acton got Carthage within two at 23-21, Elmhurst took the set 25-22.

In the second, the Firebirds jumped out to a 10-5 lead but the Bluejays retaliated with five-straight points to knot it at 10. Another 5-2 run for Elmhurst saw the home team go up in front 15-13. Later in the set, a Bluejays ball handling error allowed Carthage to shrink the deficit to one at 23-22 and later a kill from Horner tied it at 25 but Elmhurst collected the final two points to take a two-set lead 27-25.

Carthage started with back-to-back kills from Andrea Kozak and Nicole Acton giving the Firebirds a six-point advantage in the third. A Bluejays attack error helped put the visitors up four until a 9-4 run for Carthage extended the lead to 23-14. Though Elmhurst tried to mount a comeback, a Bluejays attack error gave the set to Carthage 25-19.

With a three-point lead to begin the fourth set, back-to-back blocks from Acton and McGee widened the margin to 11-7 in favor of the visitors. Three-straight points for the Firebirds made it 17-11 as Carthage tied the match at two apiece with a block from Horner and Leena Ajibola

In the final set, the Firebirds started with a two-point advantage with a block from Kozak and Ajibola. Another 6-0 run for Elmhurst changed the score to 10-6. Though Carthage battled to get within four, the Bluejays took the match 15-10.

Next up, the Firebirds are scheduled to play Millikin on Sunday, March 14 beginning at 5 p.m.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"We got off to a slow start in this match. Elmhurst is an experienced and very scrappy defensive team. We switched the lineup a bit to get a bigger block and more offense and that helped. We got it to a fifth set after losing the first two but had a bad passing run then missed serves at the end and it's tough to win that way. Both teams hit a low percentage. We have a lot to work on this week to get ready for a very good Millikin team on the road."
