Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Firebirds Beat Illinois Wesleyan at Home

KENOSHA, Wis. — In their second home match of the season, the No. 5 Carthage College women's volleyball picked up a four-set win over Illinois Wesleyan 3-1 in the Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action on Wednesday afternoon.

Carthage (4-1, 4-1 CCIW) went up 7-2 to begin until Illinois Wesleyan (1-2, 1-2) battled back to tie it at 12. The lead changed hands five times over the next few points until six-straight points for the Titans put the visitors out in front 23-18. Though the Firebirds got within three, the visitors took the set 25-21.

The home team held a two-point advantage in the second as a block from Nicole Acton made it 10-8. Later in the set, a block by Leena Ajibola and Molly Skoda put the Firebirds up by six. A kill by Haley Horner extended the Carthage lead to 23-19 until Illinois Wesleyan rattled off five-straight points tying it at 24. With the score even at 25, a kill from Skoda and a Titans attack error gave the set to the home team 27-25.

The momentum carried over for the Firebirds as a kill from Acton made it 11-8. Though the Titans went up 17-14, Carthage rallied tying it at 23, and used a small 3-1 run to win the set 26-24.

It was all Firebirds in the final set going up 14-3 with a kill from Acton. Carthage won the match 25-9.

The Firebirds are on the road next facing Wheaton (Ill.) on Wednesday, March 24 at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"It was a gutsy win after a slow offensive start. We tussled back and forth with them in sets 2 and 3 and had some clutch hitting and defense to pull out two two-point wins. In set four our serving, blocking, and defense set the tone for us to build a big lead. I thought Jordan Barrette and Kathryn Shuty did a good job moving the ball around. Andrea Kozak, Molly Skoda, Haley Horner, and Nicole Acton kept hitting better with each set. Aubree Bucheger, Megan Dawrant, and Autumn McGee were tough on defense! Always happy to defend our home court!"
