Game Recap: #6 Men's Volleyball |

No. 3 Firebirds Cruise to Victory over Vikings

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — The No. 3 Carthage College men's volleyball team collected their seventh conference victory this season beating Augustana (Ill.) 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in the Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action.

It was a back-and-forth first set to start as the match was locked at 11 early on. After a Vikings service error tied it at 16, Carthage (11-0, 7-0 CCIW) went on a quick 7-0 run sparked by blocks from Bryce Thomas, Parker Connolly, and Matt Slivinski. Though Augustana (6-4, 5-2 CCIW) got within three, a final kill from Slivinski gave the Firebirds a one-set lead 25-21.

A kill from Zach Bulthuis in the second put Carthage ahead 10-5. The Firebirds put together a 9-4 run extending the margin to 20-9. Two kills from Slivinski and Thomas saw the set go to Carthage 25-15.

It was all Firebirds in the third as a kill from Carter Schmidt made it 11-5. Later in the set, three-straight kills for Carthage widened the lead to nine as the Firebirds won 25-16.

Carthage travels to face Loras on Wednesday, March 17 beginning at 7 p.m.

Head Coach JW Kieckhefer

"I'm really proud of the way we blocked the ball today! Parker Connolly and Zach Bulthuis took on the challenging Augustana middles and did a fantastic job of slowing them down. Their effort and attention to detail was phenomenal today.

Once we settled in during set two our offense came alive. I'm really proud of Carter Schmidt for taking advantage of a great match-up and Bryce Thomas for his consistent scoring ability!

Great team win on the road for the Firebirds! Now we have to lock in to do this again on Wednesday to play a great Loras squad."
