Men’s Basketball Defeats Elmhurst on Senior Day

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men's basketball team ended the 2021 regular season with an 81-70 victory over Elmhurst on Senior Day Saturday afternoon in the Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action at Tarble Arena.

Carthage (5-6, 5-6 CCIW) began the first with an 11-6 margin with a jumper from Josh Washburn. Elmhurst (6-2, 6-2 CCIW) battled back getting within three until a jumper from Fillip Bulatovic put the Firebirds up five with under 10 minutes in the half. At the 8:20 mark, Bulatovic sank a three-pointer which extended the lead to nine at 26-17. The Bluejays retaliated with a 20-7 run flipping the score to 37-33 however, a steal and layup from Sean Johnson just before the buzzer saw the Elmhurst advantage shrink to two at 37-33. 

To begin the second, Carthage regained control of the game with a layup from Johnson at the 15:08 mark making it 46-41. Though Elmhurst cut the deficit to three with under seven minutes to play, the Firebirds went on a 15-6 run pushing the advantage to 12 with three minutes left. Carthage cruised to the 81-70 victory. 

The Firebirds will be the sixth seed in the CCIW Tournament and will play at Augustana (Ill.) on Saturday, March 6.

  • Senior Josh Washburn registered a new career-high finishing with 29 points.
  • Fillip Bulatovic recorded his fourth double-double on the season finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds. 
  • Sean Johnson nearly missed a double-double on the day collecting 24 points and nine rebounds. 
  • TJ Best and Garrett Horner grabbed seven and six rebounds respectively for Carthage.
  • With the win, the Firebirds snap the Bluejays six game win streak.
