Women’s Volleyball Starts Spring Season with 3-0 Win over Carroll

KENOSHA, Wis.  — The Carthage College women's volleyball began their spring season with a 3-0 win against Carroll (Wis.) in the Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) action on Sunday afternoon at Tarble Arena.

Carthage (1-0, 1-0 CCIW) began the first set with a 5-3 advantage over Carroll (Wis.) (0-1, 0-1 CCIW). The Pioneers battled back to tie it at five however, the Firebirds put together a 14-5 run to go up 19-10. A kill from Andrea Kozak made it 21-14 as Carthage went on to take the first set 25-17 with a Pioneers service error. 

In the second, the Firebirds tied it at five with a kill from Nicole Acton. Later in the set, a block from Acton made it 12-9 in favor of Carthage. A kill from Makayla Morgan and a block from Acton put the Firebirds up 20-16. Carroll (Wis.) put together a 5-1 run of their own to tie it at 21. Out of a Carthage timeout, the Firebirds respond with a fast 5-1 run to take the set 25-22. 

The Pioneers went up 12-10 to begin the third until a kill from Morgan and a Carroll (Wis.) attack error tied the set at 12. Carthage went on another 9-5 run to go up 21-17 sparked by a kill from Acton. The Firebirds went on to win the match 25-19. 

Carthage are on the road next playing North Park on Saturday, March 6 at 2 p.m.

Quick Facts

  • Autumn McGee led the Firebirds in kills with 13 while senior Haley Horner added 10. McGee also had three aces in the match. 
  • Senior Jordyn Barrette registered 19 assists while freshman Jenna Millen recorded 16.
  • Megan Dawrant led Carthage in digs with 13 as the Firebirds hit .321 in set one with 12 kills off 28 attacks.
