Tough Second Half Costs Men’s Basketball at Day One of Music City Classic

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Carthage College men's basketball team fell to Tufts 81-70 Wednesday evening to start the Music City Classic. 

Tufts (3-7) held a 13-3 margin to begin until two straight buckets from Kyle Kostes cut the deficit to 20-14. Later, Colton Sigel sank a three-pointer and a layup from Nemi Ostojic made it a two-point game 28-26 with 8:05 left in the half. Carthage (6-6) then took their first lead of the game off a bucket from Tyler Guest and three from Sigel 32-28. Crishawn Cook added another three giving the Firebirds a 35-33 advantage until a last-second layup for the Jumbos tied it heading into the intermission break.  

The Jumbos came out of halftime with a 17-8 run flipping the score to 52-43. Fillip Bulatovic scored an easy layup which made it 54-46 with 11:32 remaining. Later, Tufts went ahead 64-50 off a layup forcing a Carthage timeout. The Firebirds responded with an 11-4 run narrowing the gap to seven with a three from Garrett Horner, a Kostes jumper, a layup from Bulatovic, and a long-range basket from Sigel. Carthage again made it a seven-point game with a free throw from Cook with 55 seconds left but Tufts won the game 81-70.

Carthage concludes the Music City Classic facing Berry tomorrow, December 30 at 3 p.m.  

Quick Facts

  • Fillip Bulatovic had a team-high 17 points while collecting 11 rebounds and five assists. It marks the fifth game this season the junior has recorded a double-double. 
  • Colton Sigel added 11 points and three assists as it is the sixth game Sigel has had 10 or more points. 
  • Nemi Ostojic added a season-best 10 points and four rebounds while Crishawn Cook had 10 points.
