Carthage Football Drops Finale with Washington University

KENOSHA, Wis. — Playing in their final game of the 2021 season, the Carthage football team fell 37-16 against Washington University on Saturday at Art Keller Field.

The visitors took an early lead, scoring 13 points in the first quarter before adding a field goal to make it a 16-0 score at halftime. After the Bears (7-3, 7-2 CCIW) scored early in the third quarter, the Firebirds (3-7, 3-6 CCIW) found the end zone on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Jessie to Sylvere Campbell. While the visitors would add another touchdown, David Collins connected on a 23-yard field goal to make it a 30-9 game at the beginning of the final quarter.

After Washington returned a kickoff for a touchdown, Jessie and Campbell would connect one more time, as the freshman wide receiver came down with a one-handed grab in the corner of the end zone to make it a 37-16 final score.

Head Coach Dustin Hass

"In the first half, we struggled to stay on the field, and that was one of the things we talked about pregame that we needed to work on in order to have success. Jessie got the start today at quarterback after he had a good week of practice. He did a lot of good things out there. It's a blessing to have as many young quarterbacks as we do, since they'll be here a while. It's good to get them out there and see how they develop."

"Sylvere has some big hands, and he did all of that today with a broken finger, which makes it all the more impressive. We did a good job of getting him the ball, and Kyle made some good throws as well. Sylvere has a big body and can play the ball well in the air. Another highlight from today was our depth at running back, but we need to give a lot of the credit to the guys up front."

Offensive Lineman Drew Neville

"As a senior, I just wanted to take the field one last time with my guys and leave it all out there. I'm pretty happy with how we performed, especially in the second half. Rey has done a really good job and he's carried the momentum he had last week over to today, it was a solid performance. The next-man-up mentality is something our coaches do a good job of getting us ready for at practice during the week. We know things are going to happen, guys get dinged up, but we're pretty confident. The way we came out of the locker room at halftime, we were ready to play, and it took us some time to regroup, but when we did, it felt good out there."
