Firebirds Win Home Opener over Lake Forest

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College women's swimming and diving team defeated Lake Forest in their first dual meet of the season 189-111 on Saturday.

Jordyn Bloode picked up two first-place individual finishes on the day winning the 1000-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke. Allison Vassilakos took first in the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle while Grace Norman clocked a winning time of 1:10.99 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Maria Gutzweiler and Izzy Bertaud tied for first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.58. 

The Firebirds took the top two spots in three events on the day as Vassilakos and Bertaud went one and two in the 100-yard freestyle. Ashleigh EspinozaAlyssa Sayatovic placed first and second in the 200-yard breaststroke while Bloode and Espinoza went one and two in the 200-yard individual medley. 

In relay events, the team of Gutzweiler, Grace NormanElise Merucci, and Bertaud clocked a first-place time of 1:52.92 in the 200-yard medley relay followed by the team of Abigail BarnesJordyn KaplanEmma Roche, and Kaitlyn Fogo

Vassilakos, Bloode, Kaplan and Signe Hauck won the 200-yard freestyle relay while Bertaud, Fogo, Merucci, and Gutzweiler placed second. 

In diving events, Kaycee Siears placed second in the one and three-meter competitions. 

Carthage hits the road for the Calvin Quad Invitational which will start at 6 p.m. on Friday, November 5.
