Carthage Falls Short in Season Opener at Millikin

DECATUR, Ill. — A second-half comeback effort by the Carthage women's basketball team came up short, as they fell 77-66 at Millikin on Saturday at the Griswold Center.

The home team took an early lead and would eventually go out in front by a score of 22-8 after the first quarter of play. Carthage (0-1, 0-1 CCIW) would go on to score 14 second-quarter points compared to 18 from Millikin (1-0, 1-0 CCIW), setting the scoreboard at 40-22 at the half.

Kelsey Coshun opened up the second half for Carthage with a layup on an assist by Destiny Antoine. Carthage would go on to score 24 in the third period, gaining momentum headed into the final 10 minutes of play. Jumpers from Bridget Barrett and Ayanna Ester got things started in the fourth quarter, before Carthage made it a 10-point game following a three from Ester and layup by Amanda Larson. However, time expired before Carthage was able to catch the home team as they fell by 11.

Carthage returns home to Tarble Arena next, as they host Millikin on Monday, January 25 at 6 p.m. While no spectators are currently allowed, you can follow along with the live stream and stat pages on the athletics website.

Head Coach Tim Bernero

"We took a little too long to find our offensive footing. Their offense came too easily in the first half, and some of that was them, but we need to get better on the defensive end. We battled back and got things going after halftime. While we're disappointed in the result, we're not discouraged if we can correct the correctable."
