Men’s Cross Country Runs Annual Intrasquad 5K

9/20/2020 11:46:00 AM

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men's cross country team competed in their Intrasquad 5K on Saturday, an annual time trial the team has run for the past seven seasons.

"We had a really strong day on the course and the work they've all put in on their own since March was very apparent," said head coach Josh Henry. "We were led today by a very strong performance from Thomas Olenek, who led the race at the mile and didn't look back."

Since the 2014 season when Henry took over as head coach, the Carthage men's cross country team has run a time trial at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course at UW-Parkside. The team breaks into three squads of red, black, and white, and compete against each other in a 5K race.

Finishing in first individually was Olenek for the red team, who crossed the finish line in 16:23,  the fastest time in the event's seven year history. On the white team and placing second was freshman Trevor Swanson, who finished with a 16:39, a top-10 time in the history of the event. Peyton Heiser clocked a 16:52 to take third overall for the white team, while freshman Micah Anderson was the top finisher for the black team, placing fourth with a time of 17:07.

"The freshman class was impressive yet again today, highlighted by a great run by Trevor Swanson," said Henry. "Derek Garmire was also impressive, running a lifetime best on a course that is pretty challenging. I am really encouraged by the youth of this team and how deep they are this early in the semester."

The red team took first overall, led by Olenek's top finish and Cameron Fischer's fifth-place finish, with 39 points. The entire team's average time in the 5K of 18:30.3 is the fastest all time, topping the previous best of 18:33.4 in 2016.

The men's cross country team will compete in the September Shutdown Virtual Showdown next on Saturday, September 26 at 8 a.m. on the track at Art Keller Field.
