Clermont, Fla. — On the fifth day of their spring trip, the No. 14 Carthage College softball team picked up a pair of wins over Gordon 7-2 and Wittenberg 3-2 on Thursday at Legends Way Park.
The Lady Reds (9-1) began game one with a four-run second sparked by an RBI single from Marissa Maldonado and a fielder's choice to go up 4-0 over the Scots (1-8). Ellie Benero tripled and scored in the third while an RBI double from Courtney Polanski put Carthage up 7-0. Gordon added runs in the sixth but the Lady Reds came away with the victory 7-2.
In the second game of the day, the Tigers (3-2) plated a lone run in the opening frame before Carthage responded with a three-run home run from Makenzie Miller to give the Lady Reds the lead 3-1. Although Wittenberg tallied a run in the seventh, a Tigers strikeout and flyout sealed the victory for Carthage 3-2.
The final day of the spring games begins on Friday, March 13 facing Defiance at 3 p.m. CST at Legends Park.
