Ivan Esquivel Scores Game-Winner in 76th Minute

KENOSHA, Wis. -- After taking 22 shots, the Carthage College Red Men broke through the Alma College defense late in the second half, taking a 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Art Keller Field.

The Red Men (1-3) owned a majority of the possession and shots in the first half of play, but were unable to find the back of the net on 12 total shots with 61% of the possession. They continued to fire away in the second period, taking 10 more until the 76th minute, when Ivan Esquivel powered his way through a crowd of Alma (2-3) defenders. The senior sent a ball across the goal with his left foot that found the bottom-right corner to give Carthage the lead.

Up next for the Red Men is a match at St. Olaf College on Friday, September 13 at 4 p.m.

Head Coach Steve Domin

"Quietly, we have been rolling without the services of some key returners and scorers to start the season. Injuries are always a part of college soccer, but this year has been even worse than last. I can see why Alma has had some good wins already this year. They are well-coached, have some special outlet players, solid goalkeeping, and ball winners. In the long run I think our pressure and our ability to get at backline players won out. Ivan had three or four really nice runs on dribble capped off by an effort goal. Noah Smeja, who didn't show up in the book, was about as tenacious as we have seen a freshman be in a few years."

"The pressure of our front third was supported well in the midfield by Danny and Michael Eloyza. We have had a long line of brothers and it's fun to watch another set be successful. I'm proud of those guys as the swings seem so great now with the schedule we are playing. But it doesn't get any easier from here, as we head up to play an undefeated team in St. Olaf, as well as Macalester, one of the teams who got us last year and just tied Chicago, all on the road."

Quick Facts

  • Carthage's 28 shots today are the most they've had in a game since taking 29 in a 4-1 win over Silver Lake on October 5, 2018.
  • Ivan Esquivel scored his second goal of the season today, and now has 15 in his Carthage career.
