Red Men Fall in Battle at Wisconsin-Oshkosh 20-19

OSHKOSH, Wis. -- In a tough season opener at Wisconsin-Oshkosh, the Carthage College football team fell 20-19 Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

It was a back-and-forth first quarter, as neither team was able to find the endzone, with the home team scoring the lone three points on a 47-yard field goal. Carthage (0-1) responded midway through the second quarter, when Colten Klein found Bret Patton who raced in for a 67-yard touchdown. After Wisconsin-Oshkosh (1-0) reclaimed the lead on a touchdown, the Red Men special teams came up with a huge play, as Dylan Ramirez blocked a field goal and Kevin O'Boyle scooped it up, going the distance for an 85-yard touchdown. Carthage would enter the halftime break with a 13-10 advantage.

It was another quiet period offensively in the third quarter, with the Titans drawing it even at 13 before going up 20-13 early in the fourth. As the home team lined up for another field goal attempt from 30 yards out, Martinez got a hand on it once again, with Steven Shipp picking it up and turning it into six for the Red Men on a 72-yard return.

After a missed two-point conversion attempt, Carthage was unable to make anything of the final seconds they were given on offense, falling by one point on the road to a UW-Oshkosh team who received votes in the D3football.com Preseason Top-25 Poll.

The Red Men will take next weekend off before returning to action for their home-opener on Saturday, September 21 when they host Carroll at noon.

Head Coach Dustin Hass

"We played well today, especially with our backs against the wall, our defense and special teams did a great job executing. Our guys on the backside of special teams showed great awareness with the scope-and-scores, especially in critical situations."

"Wisconsin-Oshkosh has a couple of big guys up front on defense that handled us pretty well. They're front-six played very well, but none of our guys have anything to be ashamed of, they competed their butts off for 60 minutes. A pillar of our program is having guys that are going to play hard until they can't play anymore."

"This was a great football game, we have confidence in our team and know they'll keep working hard to prepare for our next game."
