Carthage Serves St. Thomas First Loss of the Season

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- The No. 19 Carthage College women's volleyball team defeated No. 18 St. Thomas in straight sets 3-0 to start day one of the Sandy Schumacher Tournament at McPhee Physical Education Center.

For the Lady Reds (9-1), it was a back-and-forth effort to start with St. Thomas (8-1) before the Tommies took an 18-13 advantage. Carthage went on a 12-5 run to take the first set. The back-and-forth effort continued in the second set until a 15-6 run for the Lady Reds saw the score shift to 23-14. St. Thomas made a late rally to shrink the deficit before Carthage collected the final two points to take the set.  After the Tommies went up 16-14, the Lady Reds began to climb back in, closing out the set with an 11-5 run to take the match 25-21.

Carthage returns to action for day two Saturday, September 14, taking on tournament host No. 9 Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 11 a.m. before finishing the tournament against Gustavus Adolphus at 1 p.m.

Head Coach Leanne Ulmer

"It was great to get a win over St. Thomas. They are very athletic and well-coached. I thought our defense was the difference in the match. We got behind in set one and three and served tough, we had some timely blocks and some terrific floor defense. Megan Behrendt set the tone with some impressive digs and kills to start the match. Ellie LeCount did a nice job distributing the ball and Haley Horner got it going offensively. Andrea Kozak and Nicole Acton had some timely blocks while Shannon Kebisek had a few nice service runs and some terrific digs. Laura de Rosales sealed it with a strong service run to end the match."

Quick Facts

  • The Carthage defense again put up a strong performance holding St. Thomas to a .046 attacking percentage.
  • Haley Horner registered double-digit kills for the third-straight game with 10 while Megan Behrendt and Andrea Kozak chipped in with eight.
  • Ellie LeCount led the Lady Reds in assists with 28.
