CHICAGO—The Carthage College women's lacrosse team entered their 2019 regular season finale at University of Chicago on Saturday in need of a victory, and other scenarios to fall into place for them to secure a spot in the four-team 2019 CCIW Women's Lacrosse Tournament. The Lady Reds couldn't take care of business against the first-year program as they dropped a 20-5 decision.
Carthage finishes the 2019 campaign in fifth place with a 6-9, 3-4 CCIW record, and outside of the playoff picture for the first time in their five-season history in the CCIW. University of Chicago, the #2 seed in the 2019 CCIW Tournament, finishes their inaugural campaign with a 14-2, 6-1 record, and will host #3 seed North Central College (Ill.) in the 2019 CCIW Tournament Semifinal on Wednesday, May 1.
Chicago outshot Carthage 31-15 in the winter-like conditions.
University of Chicago 20, Lady Reds 5
Carthage took a quick 1-0 lead 14 seconds into the game courtesy of
Greigh Hoeft's goal, but couldn't find a groove to keep that momentum alive as Chicago registered 10 goals each in the first and second halves en route to a 20-5 victory.
Margaux Giacotto led the Carthage offense with a pair of goals and one assist for three points, along with a team-high seven ground balls. Hoeft,
Nicole Bowman and
Mairead Brown each tallied goals for the Lady Reds.
Jessie Gibson paced the Carthage draw control efforts with seven while
Kendall Prochaska's three caused turnovers led the defense.
Emily Lima caps her phenomenal 2019 campaign ranked fourth in NCAA Division III with 3.8 caused turnovers per game for Carthage (57 total).
The Lady Reds bid farewell to
Greigh Hoeft, their lone senior on the 2019 roster.
