Amy Gillmore Notches 500th Career Win in Sweep Over Concordia Chicago



 


KENOSHA, WIS.—The Carthage College softball team continued their five-doubleheader week with a Wednesday-afternoon home affair against Concordia University Chicago. The Lady Reds ran away with a sweep over the Cougars by scores of 3-1 and 6-3. The victory in game one marked the 500th career victory for Lady Reds head coach Amy Gillmore, who exited Wednesday with a 501-336 record in the midst of her 22nd season. She is now one of 38 active NCAA Division III coaches to reach the 500-victory plateau.
 
The sweep ups the Lady Reds' record to 22-8, 8-4 CCIW while Concordia Chicago falls to 19-14, 9-8 NACC.

Ellie Bernero drove in Carthage's three runs, which began with a first-inning RBI-double down the left field line that scored Alexandra Millett (single) to make the score 1-0. The third inning resulted in a two-run home run for Bernero, which pushed Carthage's lead to 3-0.
 
The Cougars exploited a Carthage error in the sixth inning, which turned into a run that narrowed their deficit to 3-1.
 
Lady Reds pitcher Stefanie Guercio improved her pitching record to 14-3 on the season, where she registered 12 strikeouts, allowed two hits and one walk. Bernero paced Carthage at the plate with a 2-for-3 day.

Carthage touched the Cougars for six first-inning runs. Makenzie Miller knocked in a pair of runs with a double, while Courtney Polanski (two RBI) and Rylee Johnson each notched RBI-singles in the first inning en route to a 6-0 lead for the Lady Reds. The Cougars cut Carthage's lead in half at 6-3 with a second-inning run, and two more in the seventh inning.
 
Bernero picked up the pitching win for Carthage, where she allowed eight hits and one walk while striking out two batters. Rylee Johnson paced Carthage at the plate with a 2-for-3 outing.
 
The Lady Reds will host UW-Whitewater (DH) on Thursday, April 25 at 3:00 p.m.
