KISSIMMEE, FLA.—The Carthage College softball team concluded their spring break with a pair of games against Roanoke College and Bates University at the Osceola Softball Complex in Kissimmee, Florida on Friday.
Stefanie Guercio's fourth complete-game shutout on the pitching rubber this season propelled the Lady Reds to a 3-0 decision over Roanoke, handing them their second loss of the season over 11 games.
Naomi Alonzo's complete-game pitching victory, and a pair of RBI from
Ellie Bernero helped Carthage secure a 3-1 decision over Bates.
Â
The Lady Reds' victories give them a four-game win streak and a 7-3 record, marking the most wins during spring break since 2009 when they went 8-2. Roanoke falls to 9-2 while Bates drops to 2-8.

It was another day at the office for Guercio, who rang up 12Â batters and allowed just three hits and two walks. The Lady Reds got things rolling with runners on base in the seventh inning, thanks to three Roanoke errors with two outs.
Danielle Koziczkowski, who reached on an error, circled the bases off back-to-back singles from
Alexandra Millett and
Donna Stevens to make the score 1-0. Carthage tacked on a pair of runs when
Naomi Alonzo reached on a dropped fly ball in the outfield, where Stevens and
Angie Stepanski (Millett's pinch runner) touched home plate en route to a 3-0 lead.
Â
Millett and Alonzo each registered a pair of hits at the plate for the Lady Reds.

Â
Alonzo went the distance with a season-high eight strikeouts while allowing just three hits and two walks in the pitching win. The Lady Reds set the tone with a 1-0 lead in the second inning, courtesy of
Ellie Bernero's RBI-single to right field that scored
Rylee Johnson, who walked. Bates answered with a third-inning run to tie the game 1-1.
Â
Alonzo, who led off the fourth with a double, took advantage of a muffed ground ball hit by
Emmily Zinkiewicz and scored from second base to give Carthage a 2-1. The Lady Reds iced the game in the sixth inning when
Brooke Sefcik doubled before her pinch runner
Veronica Pieters scored off Bernero's double to widen the margin to 3-1.
Â
Bernero paced Carthage at the plate with a 2-for-3 outing that included two RBI.

The Lady Reds will return to the Midwest and will face University of Chicago (DH) on Wednesday, March 13 at the Stagg Field Complex in Chicago at 3:00 p.m.
