ROSEMONT, ILL.—After an 11-day hiatus from competition, the Carthage College softball team invaded the BallPark at Rosemont for a Tuesday-afternoon doubleheader against Dominican University. It was another day at the office for Lady Reds junior pitcher
Stefanie Guercio, who rang up 12 batters en route to her fourth complete-game shutout of the season in a 1-0 decision over the Stars in game one.
Makenzie Miller's pinch-hit, two-run single in the sixth inning propelled the Lady Reds over Dominican 2-1 in game two.
The sweep gives Carthage a 9-3, 0-0 CCIW record while Dominican falls to 9-7, 0-0 NACC.
Lady Reds 1, Dominican 0
Guercio was nearly flawless as she allowed just four hits and walked no batters over her 12-strikeout, complete-game shutout. Her run support occurred in the fifth inning, when
Emmily Zinkiewicz's sacrifice fly ball to center field scored
Courtney Polanski from third base to give Carthage a 1-0 lead.
Guercio iced the game by striking out the side in the seventh inning to lock a 1-0 victory for Carthage. Carthage's offense pounded five hits in the contest, led by
Danielle Koziczkowski's 2-for-2 day at the plate.
Lady Reds 2, Dominican 1
The Stars touched Carthage for a fifth-inning run when Maddie Sniegolski tripled and scored off McCarthy Winters' single. It proved to be the Lady Reds' ignition in the sixth inning, where a
Brooke Sefcik triple, and a walk each from Polanski and Zinkiewicz loaded the bases.
Makenzie Miller followed with a one-out, pinch-hit, bases-loaded single that scored Sefcik and Polanski to give Carthage a 2-1 lead.
Alonzo, who allowed just four hits and two walks, notched the complete-game pitching victory for Carthage with nine strikeouts. Five different Lady Reds contributed a hit at the plate.
The Lady Reds will face Milwaukee School of Engineering (DH) on Saturday, March 23 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at 12:00 p.m.
