Lady Reds Fall to Bulldogs and Cobbers in Florida

KISSIMMEE, FLA.—Day two of The Spring Games at the Osceola Softball Complex in Kissimmee, Florida saw the Carthage College softball team face DeSales University and Concordia University Moorhead. The Lady Reds' comeback bid with a six-run seventh inning wasn't enough in a 9-8 loss to DeSales. Carthage couldn't string together big plays in a 3-1 loss to Concordia Moorhead in the back-end of the doubleheader.

The losses drop Carthage's record to 2-2, 0-0 CCIW.

DeSales 9, Lady Reds 8

DeSales touched the Lady Reds for three runs in the first inning, followed by five more in the fourth inning en route to an 8-0 lead. Carthage avoided the mercy rule in the fourth inning when Brooke Sefcik's RBI groundout that scored Kelsey Domagala narrowed their deficit to 8-1.

The Lady Reds and Bulldogs traded sixth-inning runs, making the score 9-2 before Carthage's six-run comeback in the seventh. All six Lady Reds runs in the seventh were earned as Donna Stevens, Naomi Alonzo, Rylee Johnson and Angie Stepanski each tallied RBI hits while Danielle Koziczkowski knocked-in a run with a fielder's choice to help Carthage cut their deficit to 9-8, where they fell short.

Alonzo paced Carthage at the plate with three hits. Ellie Bernero, Jordyn Bloode and Alonzo all saw action on the pitching rubber for the Lady Reds.

Concordia Moorhead 3, Lady Reds 1

The Lady Reds and Cobbers traded first-inning runs to make the score 1-1, where Guercio knocked-in Stevens on a single to center field. That was all the scoring Carthage came up with as Concordia notched a pair of third-inning runs en route to a 3-1 lead and eventual victory.

Guercio paced the Lady Reds at the plate with two hits, and on the pitching rubber with 13 strikeouts in the losing effort.

The Lady Reds will return to competition on Wednesday, March 6 against Penn State Brandywine (11:15 a.m. ET) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1:30 p.m. ET).
