Lady Reds Take Down Penn State Brandywine 9-0, Fall to RPI 4-1 in Florida

KISSIMMEE, FLA.—Cool temperatures and light winds blistered the Carthage College softball team in their games against Penn State Brandywine and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at the Osceola Softball Complex in Kissimmee, Florida on Wednesday. The five-inning mercy rule came into play for the first time in 2019 when the Lady Reds ran past Penn State Brandywine 9-0 before the back-end resulted in a 4-1 loss to RPI.

The split sends Carthage's record to 3-3, 0-0 CCIW.

Lady Reds 9, Penn State Brandywine 0

Stefanie Guercio turned in another respectable outing with six strikeouts while allowing just one hit over four innings pitched in the victory. Her support began with Makenzie Miller's first-inning bases-loaded single that scored Alexandra Millett to make the score 1-0.

Carthage added four more runs in the third inning, where Guercio helped herself with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Millett from third base, which pushed the margin to 2-0. Naomi Alonzo's infield single that plated Donna Stevens widened Carthage's lead to 3-0. Kelsey Domagala's two-run double poured more salt on Penn State Brandywine's wound, which sent home Miller and Alonzo en route to a 5-0 lead.

Carthage's second sacrifice fly of the game came courtesy of Donna Stevens, who made the score 6-0 in the fourth inning when she drove in Millett from third base. Carthage closed the game's scoring in the fifth inning when Millett's two-run single, and Guercio's RBI-double plated three runs to make the score 9-0.

Millett finished the game with a 4-of-4 outing at the plate along with two RBI.

RPI 4, Lady Reds 1

Naomi Alonzo, who struckout three batters in a complete-game effort on the pitching rubber for Carthage, didn't get tagged for a run until the sixth inning when Ryleigh Greenwald's RBI-double drove in Steph Cavallaro and Erika Holowka en route to a 2-0 advantage. Kelsey Domagala drove-in Carthage's lone run with a sixth-inning single that plated pinch runner Marissa Maldonado for a 2-1 score.

RPI cemented the contest with two hits and two runs in the seventh inning, where they secured a 4-1 victory.

Millett and Alonzo each went 2-for-3 at the dish for Carthage.

The Lady Reds will face Eastern University (9:00 a.m. ET) and Bridgewater College (1:30 p.m. ET) on Thursday, March 7 at the Osceola Softball Complex in Kissimmee, Florida.
