KENOSHA, WIS.—The Carthage College men's lacrosse team returned to Art Keller Field after an 11-day layoff from competition to face Concordia University (Wis.) on Wednesday night. The Red Men, who dropped an 11-7 heartbreaker to the Falcons last season, redeemed themselves with a 16-7 victory behind
Colin Poitras's game-high five goals.
"A really good win," said Red Men assistant coach
Canyon Smith. "We avenged the loss from last season and got some good momentum going into conference."
Poitras topped out at six points with his one assist while fellow Winnipeg native
Andy Szun led all scorers with three goals and four assists for seven points.
Ethan Flight also added a hat trick, and two assists for a five-point effort.
Joe Poremba led all players with four caused turnovers and eight ground balls for Carthage.
Red Men goalie
Kyle Guthrie registered 11 saves over 44:32 in the winning-effort, while teammate
Sam Kotsonas made two saves over 15:28 while playing in man-down situations. Falcons goalie Garrett Wohlford turned away seven Red Men shots over 52:59 of action in the losing-effort.
The Falcons outshot Carthage 46-35, thanks to Keijo Day's game-high 14 shots, followed by Stephen Gregory's 13.
The Red Men improve to 7-2, 0-0 CCIW while Concordia (Wis.) falls to 5-3, 3-0 MLC.
Red Men 16, Falcons 7
The Red Men never trailed in the contest and played disciplined lacrosse as they turned over the ball just one time in the first quarter. Poitras netted a hat trick for Carthage within the opening 15:00, which helped give them a 6-2 lead.
The Falcons outshot Carthage 14-9 in the second quarter, but it didn't result in any goals from them. Five different Red Men scored in their 5-0 run in the second frame that propelled them to an 11-2 halftime lead.
The Falcons and Red Men were dead even in multiple categories in the second half that include goals (5-5), shots on goal (11-11) and saves (6-6). It was enough ammunition for Carthage in a 16-7 win.
Tanner Jones took all of Carthage's face-offs and registered an 11-of-27 figure.
The Red Men will travel to Calvin College on Friday, March 29 for a 7:00 p.m. (ET) game time.
