NAPERVILLE, ILL. — The Carthage College women's soccer team defeated North Central (Ill.) 1-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) play Wednesday at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, the Lady Reds broke the tie with a goal from Morgan Verbeten in the 59th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Carthage (5-5-2, 2-0-1 CCIW) defense held tight as North Central (Ill.) (7-6-1, 3-2 CCIW) tried to even the score.
Sara Lieffrig made two saves to seal the shutout victory.
The Lady Reds stay on the road for a CCIW match against Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday, October 19, starting at 1 p.m.
"That was a fantastic team effort from front to back. The team executed the game plan and really took North Central off their game. We moved the ball really well and dictated th tempo of the game. We got a great goal from Morgan off a tremendous ball from Erin. Sara didn't have to do much, but was big time when her number was called."
