Lady Reds Look to Push Win Streak Against Bluejays and Thunder

FULL GAME NOTES

THE GAMES

  • The Carthage College women's basketball team (13-5, 7-2 CCIW), who are riding a seven-game win streak, will square-off against Elmhurst College (8-9, 4-4 CCIW) in a road bout on Wednesday, January 23 at 7:00 p.m. The Lady Reds will seek revenge against Wheaton College (14-4, 8-1 CCIW) at Tarble Arena on Saturday, January 26 at 5:00 p.m.
  • The Bluejays are without a double-figures scorer in their lineup as Courtney O'Donnell leads the team with 9.2 points per game, followed by Kellee Clay (8.7 PPG) and Lisa Logan (8.5). 
  • The Lady Reds will look to exploit an Elmhurst squad that rank last in the CCIW and near the bottom of NCAA Division III teams in blocked shots (16), blocked shots per game (0.9), defensive rebounds per game (23), personal fouls per game (20.8) and rebounds (602). 
  • The Bluejays will enter their bout against Carthage having won three of their last four games, with their only loss in that span coming to Wheaton 75-60 on January 12. 
  • The Wheaton Thunder currently lead NCAA Division III in blocked shots (173) and blocked shots per game (9.6). Hannah Frazier commands the Thunder's defensive unit with 58 blocked shots, which paces the CCIW and ranks third in the country.
  • Frazier also leads Wheaton's offense with a CCIW-leading 18.9 points per game. 
  • Wheaton dropped a 56-51 decision to Augustana College on January 16, their lone CCIW defeat of the season. 
  • The Thunder have been playing without junior center Jill Berg since their 56-54 win over Illinois Wesleyan on January 2.
  • Wheaton paces the CCIW in 10 different categories, including defensive rebounds per game (29), rebounds per game (39.50) and scoring defense (58.7).

THE COACHES

  • Tethnie Carrillo (121-136) is in her 12th season as Elmhurst head women's basketball coach.
  • Kent Madsen (184-53) is in his ninth season as Wheaton head women's basketball coach. 

THE SERIES

  • The Lady Reds are 27-54 all-time against Wheaton, and 57-18 all-time against Elmhurst. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Lady Reds pushed their win streak to seven games with victories over Carroll (Wis.) (71-60) and Millikin (73-43) last week.
  • Reigning CCIW Player of the Week Bailey Gilbert eclipsed 1,000 career points against Carroll on January 16, and a school-record 565 career three-point attempts in a 74-43 win over Millikin on January 20. 

1,000 POINT/RECORD WATCH

Bailey Gilbert, who owns a school-record 229 career three-point field goals made and 565 career three-point attempts, now carries 1026 career points. Madie Kaelber, who carries 926 career points, is 74 points away from becoming the 24th Lady Reds basketball player to eclipse 1,000. 

CARTHAGE IS...

8-0 when holding opponents to under 60 points.

13-0 when leading with 2:00 remaining in the contest. 

9-0 when having more steals than opponents.

7-0 when having more rebounds than opponents. 

6-0 in the month of January.

NEW YEAR SUCCESS

The Lady Reds opened a new year 6-0 for the first time since 2013-14, where they strung together 11-straight wins. 

HIGHLY RANKED STATS

Sammie Woodward's .452 three-point field goal percentage leads the CCIW and sits 13th among NCAA Division III women's basketball players.  Carthage ranks among the top-10 NCAA Division III teams in three-points field goals made (169, 9th), three-point field goals per game (9.4, 10th) and three-point field goal percentage (.389, 5th). 

TALE OF TWO BLOCK PARTIES

Both of Carthage's opponents this week rank on opposite ends of the blocked shot spectrum. Wheaton leads the country in blocked shots (173) while Elmhurst is 431st in the country with 16 blocks. 

TALE OF TWO STREAKS

The Lady Reds sport a three-game win streak against Elmhurst, and a four-game losing skid against Wheaton.
