Lady Reds Take Down Vikings 73-54 on the Road

ROCK ISLAND, ILL.—Poor weather conditions threw a slight wrench in the Carthage College women's basketball team's trip itinerary to Augustana College on Saturday. The 15-minute delay in start time combined with being on the road didn't faze the Lady Reds as they cruised to a 73-54 victory over the Vikings.

Autumn Kalis knocked down 4-of-9 three-pointers en route to a season-high 21 points, but Carthage's 35 free throw attempts was the eye-popping stat of the evening. The Lady Reds converted 25 of those attempts from the charity stripe.

"The fact they shot 14 free throws and we shot 35 isn't unfair," said Lady Reds head basketball coach Tim Bernero. "I think we guarded them well and they (Augustana) had to get more aggressive after we made those three-pointers out of the gate. Autumn (Kalis) was huge for us in the beginning of the game as she made some shots, but we also did an incredible job creating opportunities for other people."

Kalis and Madie Kaelber engineered Carthage's perimeter presence with four three-pointers each, which helped achieve a team total of 12. Kaelber finished the contest with 17 points and five rebounds while Bailey Gilbert went 3-for-3 from the three-point line en route to a 12-point night, along with a game-high eight rebounds. Sammie Woodward's 10 points made up the four Lady Reds in double figures.

Carthage's defense came through again as they held the Vikings to just 21-of-68 (.308) shooting and 5-of-26 (.192) from beyond the arch.

The Lady Reds push their win streak to five games and improve to 11-5, 5-2 CCIW while Augustana drops to 10-6, 4-3 CCIW.

Half of Carthage's 12 three-pointers in the contest occurred in the first quarter, where they jumped to a 27-15 lead after 10:00. Bailey Gilbert generated the Lady Reds' 11-2 run to open the second quarter with a pair of three-pointers, which made the score 38-17 with 6:27 left in the frame. The Vikings returned the favor with a 10-4 run to end the first half, where they trailed Carthage 42-27.

The second half resulted in 24 free throw attempts for the Lady Reds. Carthage sunk 18 of those attempts while Augustana converted just two free throws in the second half. It was enough arsenal for the Lady Reds in a 73-54 victory over the Vikings.

Carthage will host Carroll University (Wis.) at Tarble Arena on Wednesday, January 16 at 7:00 p.m.
