KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College Red Men were powered by a career day by senior running back
Lafayette McGary in a dominant Homecoming win at Art Keller Field, defeating the Elmhrust College Bluejays on Saturday, 63-7.
The win moves the Red Men to 2-2 on the season and to 2-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, while Elmhurst falls to 1-3 and 0-3 in the conference.
"Always exciting to get a win whether it's here or on the road," said head coach
Dustin Hass, who earned his first win at Art Keller Field on Saturday. "Lafayette ran the ball really well… Tommy Bazerek is Carroll's kryptonite and
Lafayette McGary has those type of games against Elmhurst. Our offensive line did a phenomenal job, not only in pass protection but they opened some massive holes. It's pretty easy to be a running back when there is nobody near you."
McGary, a senior from Chicago, carried the ball 25 times for 179 yards and four touchdowns to power the Red Men offense. All of which were career highs. His four touchdowns, all coming in the first half, also gives him six for the season.
The Red Men opened the game up in the second quarter, as a 7-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes turned into a 42-0 blowout at the half behind 35 second quarter points.
Carthage finished with 287 rushing yards and passed for 281 as the Red Men outgained the Bluejays 568-232.
Passing for the Red Men,
Billy Dury led Carthage, throwing for 193 yards on 10-13 attempts, while
Colton Klein was 4-8 for 69 yards and one touchdown, while rushing for one as well.
Sean Wells was on the receiving end of Klein's touchdown throw from 14 yards out in the second quarter, but
Evan French led Carthage with five catches for 125 yards. Saturday marked the second time this season that French eclipsed the 100-yard milestone.
On his quarterbacks Hass stated, "the two quarterbacks played well, having a clean pocket is good, the offensive line did good in pass protection and they made great decisions all day long. We've got all the faith in the world in those guys and know they'll continue to play well."
On the other side of the ball, the Carthage defense rebounded from a shaky outing a week ago in St. Louis, winning the turnover battle with five takeaways, including a 30-yard
Marlon Sam scoop and score off a fumble. The Red Men turned the ball over just twice in the win.
"Our defense did a good job getting off the field, got in some third and long situations and were able to let those d-lineman loose and get after the passer. Kam Stubblefield played phenomenal. He was all over the ball and had a great week of practice and it showed today. We'll see if he can keep it up the rest of the way."
Kameron Stubblefield was a force on defense, making six solo tackles to lead all Red Men. Stubblefield had a huge presence in the Elmhurst backfield in the win, with a career-high three sacks and four tackles for loss.
Malik Thigpen and
Brett Sullivan each forced a fumble and
Emmet Trost and
Virgil Young had an interception each.
Lance Unland was perfect on the day, kicking a perfect 9-9 on point after trys.
The Red Men will look to put together their first win-streak of the season next week as Carthage hits the road for a matchup with Illinois Wesleyan University. Kickoff next Saturday from Bloomington, Illinois is set for 1:00 p.m.
