Red Men Fall To Albion Tuesday Night, 2-1

ALBION, Mich. – The Carthage College men's soccer team dropped a regionally-ranked matchup on Tuesday night in Michigan, as the Red Men, ranked tenth in the region, fell at number-seven Albion College, 2-1.

The loss sends the Red Men to 4-5 on the season, while Albion improves to 5-2-2 with the win.

Tough loss today," said head coach Steve Domin after the loss.  "Like some recent NFL games marred in penalties, we shot ourselves in the foot… We owned this game, got the lead, were able to play some guys while resting for conference, but gave it away at the end.  Squander some nice efforts by a few guys and frankly imploded at the end.  I think if we don't surrender the unearned PK we may have pulled it out.  That said, Albion is a nice side, ranked a few spots ahead of us, but I think we let another slip away."

After a scoreless first half, the Red Men got on the board in the opening minutes of the second half when Kevin Mahoney converted a 49th minute penalty kick to give Carthage the 1-0 lead.  For Mahoney, the goal is his third of the season, tying him for second-most on the squad with Ivan Esquivel and one behind Jerry Patino for the team lead.

However, the Red Men surrendered a 78th minute penalty kick goal to tie the game and a 84th goal gave the Britons the game-winner for the 2-1 defeat.

After limiting Albion to just one shot on goal in the first half, the Red Men surrendered six shots, five of which were on goal, as Carthage was outshot in the match 9-8 and 6-4 on goal.

Next up for Carthage, the men's soccer team will return to CCIW play on Saturday for a match against Elmhurst College.  Kick-off is slated for 5:00 p.m. on September 29th as the front-end of the Red Men and Lady Reds doubleheader.
