Red Men Drop Second-Straight On Sunday

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College men's soccer team dropped their second in a row on Sunday, falling in the Battle on the Border finale to Macalester College at Art Keller Field, 3-2.

The loss drops Carthage to 3-3 on the year, while Macalester improves to 4-2-1 with the win.

"We don't see much of that around here; losing two games in a weekend but playing two highly ranked teams can certainly put anyone in that position," said head coach Steve Domin.  "Admittedly, we just spent too much energy yesterday and with the backup of injuries and guys on yellow cards made it a tall order for 2 deep guys to play with a strong Macalaster team.  We may have won some of the stat lines and made a nice effort to get back in the game, but they countered late as we pushed forward to equalize."

The Scots opened the scoring in the 25th minute, as Macalester touched in a hard cross from the corner to give them the 1-0, which held up through the half despite Carthage earning a 3-2 edge in shots.

Macalester added a second in the 67th minute after a foul by Matt Rojel led to a penalty kick that beat Niko Mavrogiannis for a 2-0 Macalester lead.

The Red Men then woke up offensively, as a number of chances were finally answered when Jerry Patino blasted a shot from 25 yards out into the lower corner to cut the deficit to one in the 76th minute.  The goal is the fourth of the season for Patino.

The Red Men continued to push forward looking for the game-tying goal, however a counterattack foul led to a third goal, sealing the win for the Scots.

The Red Men will return to action on Wednesday with another midweek trip to Michigan, this time taking on Hope College on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. EDT.

"I would love to make a bunch of excuses but we just didn't have it today and have to adjust initiatives.  We were running in quicksand.  I like our team.  We have a lot of bullets, we just need the rest.  Doesn't get any easier playing another ranked team in Hope on the road this week."
