Women's Volleyball Finishes Weekend 2-2 With Split Saturday

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College Lady Reds finished their weekend on a tough note, after winning the Saturday opener of the Carthage College Classic over Saint Mary's University, falling in the finale to Concordia University Wisconsin.

Going 1-1 each day of the tournament, the Lady Reds finished the weekend at 7-6 on the year heading into conference play.

Carthage 3, Saint Mary's 0
Like they did on Friday, the Lady Reds opened the day with a very strong performance in their first match, hitting .346 in a four-set win.  After a first set hiccup, the Lady Reds dominated the Cardinals, winning the next three sets, 25-10, 25-14 and 25-15, committing just seven errors in those sets.  The Cardinals went downhill after the first set win, committing 24 errors over the remainder of the match.

Four Lady Reds found themselves in double digits in kills as Ellie LeCount spread the ball around nicely in the win.  Linda Morton finished with a match-high 16 kills and hit .556 to lead all players in the win.  Joining Morton were Megan Behrendt, Shannon Kebisek and Nicole Acton with 14 kills, 11 kills and 11 kills respectively.

Acton and Morton were also forces at the net for Carthage with five blocks and four blocks, but it was Katie Laio with six rejections that led all players.  Laura De Rosales rounded out the defensive leaders with a match-high 22 digs.

Concordia 3, Carthage 3
In the final match of the weekend, it looked as though the Lady Reds were going to jump out to a 1-0 lead, but facing set-point, the Falcons went on a 4-0 run down 24-22 and took the opening set 26-24.  The Lady Reds then found themselves in more trouble, as a second set, 25-15, loss put Carthage in the 0-2 hole.

The Lady Reds would rebound and win the third set behind their best hitting set of the evening, at .314, but it wouldn't be enough as a 10-2 run by the Falcons after a 4-4 tie was too much for the Lady Reds to comeback from.

Carthage finished hitting just .158 in the loss and were led by Shannon Kebisek with 12 kills, Megan Behrendt with 11 and Linda Morton with ten.  Behrendt added 17 digs followed by De Rosales and LeCount with 16 and 15 respectively.

Following the tournament, Carthage's Megan Behrendt and Ellie LeCount were named to the 2018 Carthage College Classic All-Tournament Team.  The all-tournament honros are the third for Behrendt in as many tournaments this season.

Next up for Carthage, the Lady Reds will head into College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action on Tuesday, September 18th.  The CCIW opener will feature the Lady Reds traveling down to Decatur to take on the Milikin University Big Blue.  First serve Tuesday is set for 7:00 p.m.
