WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carthage College football team won for the first time under first-year head coach
Dustin Hass on Saturday, going on the road after their week-two bye and shutting out their in-state College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin rival in Waukesha, 31-0.
The first shutout of the season for the Red Men and the third in the past two seasons moves the Red Men to 1-1 on the year and to 1-0 in the CCIW. The loss drops Carroll to 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in the league. The win extends the Red Men's winning streak over the Pioneers to eight-straight games dating back to 1996.
The Carthage offense had a strong opening drive of the game, marching 78 yards in seven plays and faced with just one third down, which
Lafayette McGary converted with a 16-yard run.
Kyle Friberg was a perfect 4-4 for 57 yards, with passes of 21 yards to
Bret Patton and 26 yards to
Tommy Bazarek during the drive. Friberg capped the drive off with a five-yard pass to Bazarek to give the Red Men the early 7-0 lead.
The Red Men offense would stall for much of the rest of the half however, as Carthage gained just four first downs and were held without any points until a
Lance Unland field goal from 24 yards as time expired in the second quarter to take a 10-0 lead into the break and give the Red Men a huge momentum boost.
After a strong first half in which the Red Men allowed 93 yards of total offense and six first down, the defense got even stronger over the final 30 minutes. Carthage didn't allow a single rushing yard in the second half. For the game, Carthage's defense allowed just 155 total yards of offense and had two takeaways and eight tackles for loss.
Amani Dennis had two interceptions to give him three on the young season and
Emmet Trost led the Red Men with eight tackles. All of which were solo.
Djogi Bumba was second on the team with five solo tackles and
Kameron Stubblefield recorded two of the Red Men's four sacks on the afternoon.
The second half saw the Red Men take control of the game on the offensive side and ensure the return of the Old Musket with three second half touchdowns to seal the game. In the third quarter it was
Liam Pooler with his first career touchdown on a five-yard run to cap-off a six-play, 59-yard drive, and on their next possession, the Red Men went 81 yards on nine plays in a drive that ended with Friberg's second touchdown pass to Bazarek. This time from 30 yards out. Friberg was very efficient in the victory, going 19-26 for 223 yards and the pair of touchdowns, while not throwing an interception. Bazarek found himself on the receiving end of a team-high six passes for 87 yards and the two scores.
Lafayette McGary rounded out the scoring with his first touchdown of the season on a six-yard run with 5:50 to play to give the Red Men the 31-0 final. McGary finished with 73 yards on 21 carries and Pooler had nine carries for 23 yards in the win.
Lance Unland finished perfect on the day, going 1-1 on field goals and 4-4 on point afters.
The Red Men will remain on the road next week as they make their first trip to the CCIW's newest member, Washington University in St. Louis. Kickoff next Saturday is set for 1:00 p.m.
