Lady Reds and Vikings Swap Shutouts in a Tuesday Split

KENOSHA, WIS.—The Carthage College softball team's 2018 home finale pitted them against Augustana College (Ill.) on Tuesday. Stefanie Guercio's complete-game, 11-strikeout shutout in the pitching circle along with home runs from Brooke Sefcik and Naomi Alonzo propelled Carthage to a 6-0 shutout win over Augustana in game one. The Vikings' lone run in the sixth inning was enough to secure them a 1-0 victory over Carthage in game two.

The split gives Carthage a 17-17, 7-5 CCIW mark while the Vikings exit Tuesday with a 21-13, 6-6 CCIW record.

Lady Reds 6, Augustana 0

Guercio's run support began with a four-run third inning, which began with Sefick's lead-off home run that gave Carthage a 1-0 edge. Courtney Polanski, who singled, scored from third base when Alexandra Millett reached on an infield error to make the score 2-0. Alonzo knocked-in Millett with a two-run home run that pushed Carthage's lead to 4-0.

Polanski and Koziczkowski each notched RBI-singles for Carthage in the sixth inning to push their lead to 6-0 over Augustana.

Juarez and Polanski each had two hits for the Carthage offense. Sefick and Alonzo each notched home runs for the Lady Reds. Guercio allowed three hits and struckout 11 batters on just 71 pitches throughout seven innings of work.

Augustana starting pitcher Kelcie Fredrickson took the loss in three innings of work.

Augustana 1, Lady Reds 0

Guercio allowed two hits and struckout three batters over three innings in a rare game-two start for the Lady Reds. She turned things to Ellie Bernero, who surrendered one run on four hits and struck out three batters over the final three innings.

That lone run occurred in the sixth inning, where Dina Falk notched a bunt single and advanced to second base off Alyssa Klahn's groundout. This set up Zayne Blumberg's RBI-single that plated Falk to give Augustana a 1-0 lead.

Millett paced Carthage at the plate with two hits while Koziczkowski, Juarez, Sefcik and Polanski each contributed one.

The Lady Reds will face Carroll University (Wis.) (DH) at Kilgour Field in Waukesha, Wisconsin on Thursday, April 26 at 3:00 p.m.
