Lady Reds Sweep Pioneers 3-2, 2-0 on Thursday

WAUKESHA, WIS.—The Carthage College softball team faced Carroll University (DH) in a Thursday-afternoon road affair in Waukesha, Wisconsin. The Lady Reds mustered just three hits against CCIW strikeout leader Amanda Osterhus in game one, but Stefanie Guercio's complete-game six-hitter offset that in a 3-2 victory over the Pioneers. Ellie Bernero tossed her second complete-game shutout of the season in Carthage's 2-0 decision over Carroll in game two.

The sweep gives Carthage a 19-17, 9-5 CCIW mark, which puts them in a tie for third place in the conference with Carroll, who exited Thursday 21-13, 9-5 CCIW.

The Lady Reds torched Carroll for a pair of first-inning runs, where Emmily Zinkiewicz led off with a walk before Vivian Juarez singled to put runners on first and second base. Juarez tagged up from second base on the play before she scored off a dropped throw from a Carroll infielder to push the score to 2-0.

Zinkiewicz, who reached on a fielder's choice, notched her second run of the game in the third inning from second base off Millett's single to make the score 3-0.

The Pioneers narrowed their deficit to 3-1 with a third-inning sacrifice fly, and made the score 3-2 in the fifth inning when Allyssa Demma knocked-in Maggie Erdman on a fielder's choice.

Juarez, Millett and Jennifer Michuda each notched a hit for Carthage. Guercio struckout five batters and scattered six hits in the pitching win for the Lady Reds.

Michuda, who singled and reached second base on an outfield error, scored of Kaitlin Shaffer's single to give Carthage a 1-0 lead. Alessia Knowski (Shaffer's pinch runner) reached second base off Brooke Sefcik's sacrifice bunt before Zinkiewicz knocked her home with a single to push Carthage's lead to 2-0.

The Lady Reds outhit Carroll 7-6 in the game. Millett paced the Lady Reds offense with two hits while five of her teammates contributed one hit.
