MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Carthage College women's lacrosse team capped off a perfect weekend to open the 2018 season, as the Lady Reds downed Hamline University at "the Dome" on the campus of Augsburg University Sunday, 15-6.
The win moves Carthage to 2-0 on the season, while Pipers, coming off the 2017 Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference championship, open their season at 0-1.
Carthage and Hamline opened with 3-0 runs respectively in the first half to create a, 3-3, tie midway through the first half. After Hamline tied it however, the Lady Reds'
Rachel Mussell scored just 20 seconds later to retake the lead for Carthage, 4-3. It would be the key moment of the match for the Lady Reds, who used the goal to ignite a 7-0 run to close out the half and take a 10-3 lead into the break.
The Lady Reds pushed the lead to nine goals out of the halftime break behind goals from
Nicole Bowman and
Jessie Gibson to give Carthage a 12-3 lead with just over 26 minutes remaining.
From there the Lady Reds cruised to victory, exchanging goals with Hamline over the final 25 minutes, to coast to a 15-6 win.
The Lady Reds outshot Hamline 31-19 in the game and 25-15 on target, while winning the battle in the faceoff circle with 14 draws controlled to nine for the Pipers.
Nicole Bowman and
Jessie Gibson led Carthage in the win with four goals each and Gibson added a pair of assists as well.
Rachel Mussell also had a hand in six goals as well, scoring three times and dishing out three assists to tie for the team-lead with
Megan McNamara. Also adding goals for the Lady Reds were
Greigh Hoeft with a pair, and
Kendell Santin and
Alexa VanOrd with one each.
Maggie Allen was dominant in goal for the Lady Reds in the win. Allen posted a .667 save percentage, making 12 saves in the win.
Katie Stell forced four turnovers and Gibson and Mussell recorded five and four ground balls respectively to lead the Lady Reds defensively.
Next up, Carthage will return home for their first home game of the season on Saturday, March 3
rd as the Lady Reds face Aurora University at 1:00 p.m. before leaving for their spring break trip.
