Lady Reds Close 2017-18 Regular Season With Three-Game Home Stand

FULL GAME NOTES

THE GAMES

  • The Carthage College women's basketball team (16-6, 9-4 CCIW) will open their season-ending, three-game home stand against North Central College (5-17, 3-10 CCIW) on Wednesday, February 14 at 7:00 p.m. The Lady Reds will follow that with a bout against #24 Illinois Wesleyan University (19-3, 12-1 CCIW) on Saturday, February 17 at 5:00 p.m.
  • The Cardinals will enter Wednesday's match-up winning just once over their past eight games, which occurred in a 71-61 decision over North Park University on February 3. 
  • North Central (Ill.) leads the CCIW with 683 three-point field goal attempts. Mayson Whipple commands the Cardinals' aerial attack with 11.9 points per game on a 34-of-126 figure from beyond the arch. Whipple also leads the team with 3.5 assists per game, and a 1.21 assist/turnover ratio.
  • Maya Wells paces the Cardinals with 5.2 rebounds per game, and ranks second on the team with 8.3 points per game. 
  • North Central's .334 field goal percentage, .427 field goal percentage defense, 211 free throws made, -8.1 rebound margin, 75.0 scoring defense, and -13.7 scoring margin rank last among CCIW women's basketball teams.
  • The #24 Titans recently saw their 16-game win streak end with a 71-61 loss at Wheaton College (Ill.) on February 7, before they came back with an 87-58 win over Carroll (Wis.) University on February 10. Illinois Wesleyan came in at #17 on the February 13 D3hoops.com Poll. 
  • Molly McGraw (12.8 PPG), Maddie Merritt (12.6 PPG) and Rebekah Ehresman (10.4 PPG) make up the Illinois Wesleyan three-headed monster. Ehresman leads all CCIW players in assist/turnover ratio (3.53), assists (106), assists per game (4.8), steals (73) and steals per game (3.32). 
  • The Titans lead NCAA Division III with 20.3 assists per game, and rank second nationally with a 1.44 assist/turnover ratio. 

THE COACHES

  • Michelle Roof (164-169) is in her eighth season as North Central head women's basketball coach. 
  • The 2017-18 season is Mia Smith's (383-162) 20th as Illinois Wesleyan head women's basketball coach. 

THE SERIES

  • The Lady Reds own a 49-27 all-time record against North Central (Ill.), and a 28-40 mark against Illinois Wesleyan. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Lady Reds registered a 77-72 win over Elmhurst College on February 10, their lone game last week. 
  • Madie Kaelber led Carthage in the contest with 21 points while Morgan Vukovich tied for a season-high 17 points on a 6-of-9 figure from the field. Morgan Harris added 12 points and eight boards while Autumn Kalis contributed 12 points on a 3-of-4 mark from the three-point line. 

THE LADY REDS ARE....

  • 6-0 when they shoot .450 or better from the field.
  • 10-1 when they hold opponents to less than 60 points.
  • 14-1 when they lead at halftime. 
  • 11-2 when they score first. 
  • 16-2 when leading with 2:00 remaining.

CARDINAL STREAKING

The Lady Reds own a 12-game home win streak against North Central College (Ill.). North Central's last road victory over the Lady Reds occurred in a 65-60 decision on February 11, 2006.

CLOSING AT HOME

The Lady Reds play their final three regular-season games at home. The last time Carthage closed the regular season with a three-game home stand was the 1999-00 season. 

NOTABLE NCAA/CCIW RANKINGS (2/14)

The Lady Reds lead the CCIW in defensive rebounds per game (30.0), fewest turnovers (299), three-point field goals made (176), three-point field goals per game (8.0) and free throw percentage (.731). Morgan Harris (33.82) sits atop the CCIW in minutes played per game while Madie Kaelber paces the league and ranks 11th in the country with a .885 free throw percentage. 

KEEPING IT CLOSE

Four of the Lady Reds' six losses this season came within 10 points. The only exceptions occurred in both of their losses to Wheaton College (Ill.). 

MILESTONE WATCH

Bailey Gilbert, who owns 168 career three pointers, is in fourth place on the Carthage all-time three-point field goal list. Haley Stercic (2011-14) holds the Lady Reds career record for most three-point field goals with 202. Gilbert's .397 (168-423) career three-point field goal percentage currently ranks fourth on the Lady Reds all-time list. Morgan Harris currently ranks third on the Carthage all-time free-throw percentage list with a .790 (271-343) figure. Harris, who has 951 career points, needs 49 more points to eclipse 1,000 for her career.
