Schantek's 600-Meter School Record, and Willis's Career-Bests Highlight Track & Field at UW-Oshkosh

OSHKOSH, WIS.—Select members of the Carthage College men's and women's track & field teams participated in the UW-Oshkosh Early Bird Invitational at the Kolf Sports Center in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on Saturday. The Red Men experienced deja vu from last season's UW-Oshkosh Early Bird Invitational as they broke the indoor 600 meter run school record again. This time is was Michael Schantek, who cemented his name into the record book with a first-place time of 1:21.89. This helped the Red Men secure third place out of six teams with 55 points.
 
Elizabeth Willis was the top Lady Reds performer on Saturday as she registered career bests in the shot put (14.01m) and weight throw (18.50m), which helped secure her team fifth place out of seven teams with 36 points.
 
UW-Oshkosh claimed the Early Bird Invitational Men's Team Championship with 332 points while the Titan women accomplished that feat with 211.50 points.
 
Dane Rasmussen, the previous 600 meter run school record holder, was on Schantek's heels with a third-place mark of 1:23.57. Caleb Hays and Aaron Austin commanded the Red Men throwers on Saturday. Austin captured second place in the weight throw with a career-best 15.99m, and fourth place in the shot put with a 14.34m. The shot put belonged to Hays, who registered a career-best 14.36m, good enough for third place.
 
Sarah Schmidt trailed Willis with second-place marks in the weight throw (17.07m) and shot put (12.97m). Schmidt's weight throw tally was a career best.
 
The Red Men and Lady Reds will return to competition on Friday, January 11 at the North Central Cardinal Opener in Naperville, Illinois at 4:30 p.m.
