St. Norbert College Tournament on Lady Reds' Radar

ST. NORBERT COLLEGE TOURNAMENT GAME NOTES

THE GAME

  • The Carthage College women's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 CCIW) will invade the St. Norbert College Tournament at the Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center in De Pere, Wisconsin on Friday, November 16 - Saturday, November 17. First on the Lady Reds' docket is UW-Superior on Friday, November 16 at 5:30 p.m. Pending Friday's result against the Yellowjackets, either Marian University or. St. Norbert College will await the Lady Reds on Saturday, November 17 at 1:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m.
  • UW-Superior (0-0, 0-0 UMAC), who have won their last four regular season conference championships, will kick-off their 2018-19 season against the Lady Reds. The Yellowjackets are now in their fourth season in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference and sport a 48-0 record in conference games over the past three seasons. 
  • UW-Superior's four-straight regular season conference championships began in 2014-15, their final season in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Returning for the Yellowjackets is senior Hannah Norlin, who paced the team with 7.7 rebounds per game and ranked second in scoring with 13.9 points per game last season. 
  • St. Norbert College registered a 10-5 overall record in 2017-18, where they forfeited 10 games due to a hazing incident.
  • The Green Knights return three of their top five scorers from last season in Sarah Neumann (10.8), Sarah Ratajczyk (12.3) and Liz Edinger (10.1). 
  • The Marian University Sabres, who opened the 2018-19 season with a 68-42 loss to Concordia Chicago on November 14, are coming off a 3-22 record in 2017-18.  
  • The 2018-19 Sabres roster includes seven freshmen, three sophomores, four juniors, and five seniors.

THE COACHES

  • Zach Otto-Fisher (23-5) is in his second season as UW-Superior head women's basketball coach.
  • Connie Tilley (682-297) is in her 42nd season as St. Norbert College head women's basketball coach.
  • The 2018-19 season marks Christine Keller's (0-1) first as Marian head women's basketball coach.

THE SERIES

  • The Lady Reds notched a 65-57 victory over UW-Superior in their lone meeting on March 3, 1977. Carthage is 5-1 all-time against St. Norbert, and 6-4 against Marian. 
LAST TIME OUT
  • Carthage's 78-57 victory over Ripon College on November 13 marked their first season-opener at home since the 2011-12 season.
  • Autumn Kalis (17), Madie Kaelber (13) and Rachel Szydlowski (10) each eclipsed double-figure scoring in Carthage's victory over Ripon. Sammie Woodward dished a career-high six assists in the contest while Bailey Gilbert chipped in six rebounds, four assists and two steals in the contest. 
  • The victory kept Carthage's perfect 7-0 all-time record against Ripon intact.

SETTING THE TONE

Carthage's s victory over Ripon now gives them a 47-14 all-time record in season openers. 

CAREER HIGHS

Sammie Woodward dished a career-high six assists in Carthage's victory over Ripon. 

FRESHMAN DEJA VU

Kelsey Coshun registered six points and two made field goals in her collegiate debut against Ripon. The last Lady Reds player to notch six points and two made field goals in her collegiate debut was Madie Kaelber in an 81-77 loss to Loras College on November 16, 2016. 

RECORD WATCH

Bailey Gilbert now owns 186 career three-point field goals made, 16 shy of tying Haley Stercic's (2011-14) career-record mark of 202. 

21-POINTS ON RIP CITY

The last time Carthage posted a 21-point victory in their season-opener was November 15, 2014, also against Ripon College (70-49).  

HISTORICAL TIDBIT

Carthage and UW-Superior squared-off one other time despite both schools being members of the Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WWIAC) from 1969-1982.
