Lady Reds Wrap-Up 2018 Season With 1-0 Loss to Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, ILL.—The 2018 season finale pitted the Carthage College women's soccer team at Thorsen-Lucken Field in Rock Island, Illinois for a Saturday-night bout against Augustana College (Ill.). Senior Joanne Stanfa, who peppered a game-high four shots, generated a Lady Reds offense that outshot Augustana 10-4 in the contest. It was the Vikings who capitalized on their fourth shot of the contest in the 71st minute, courtesy of Karissa Gottardo's header that made the score 1-0.

Courtney Lee and Morgan Verbeten each contributed a pair of shots for the Carthage offense while Katie Cochran mustered one. Lady Reds goalkeeper Emily Furmanek recorded one save over 90:00 of action in her final collegiate contest. Vikings goalkeeper Sydney Ion registered one save in a complete-game victory.

The Lady Reds wrap their 2018 season with a 7-8-3, 1-5-2 CCIW record. Augustana's victory sends their record to 13-2-3, 5-1-2 CCIW heading into the 2018 CCIW Women's Soccer Tournament, where they earned the #2 seed.

Carthage bid fair well to seniors Furmanek, Stanfa, Kelly Evancich, Anna McHatton and Taylor Stenmark following Saturday's contest.

Both squads struggled to find the net throughout the opening 45:00 as they combined for five shots. The Lady Reds registered a 7-2 shots advantage in the second half, which included Morgan Verbeten's hit post in the 66th minute. This ignited the Vikings as Gottardo made the score 1-0 in the 71st minute off a header goal. Grace Sigler and Anna Fank were credited assists on the play.

Carthage responded with a trio of shots and a corner kick, but couldn't make anything of it in a 1-0 loss.
