Wheaton and Millikin in Front of Lady Reds

FULL GAME NOTES

THE GAMES

  • The Carthage College women's basketball team (14-5, 7-3 CCIW) will seek revenge against second-place Wheaton College (Ill.) (15-4, 8-2 CCIW) on Wednesday, January 31 at King Arena in Wheaton, Ill. at 7:00 p.m. The Lady Reds are in pursuit of their first season-sweep of Millikin University (5-13, 0-9 CCIW) since 2013-14 on Saturday, February 3 at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis. at 5:00 p.m. 
  • The Thunder, who defeated Carthage 72-59 at Tarble Arena on January 4, are in the midst of a nine-game win streak that began with a 74-42 decision over Marywood University on December 30. 
  • Three-of-four Wheaton losses this season came against teams on the January 29 D3Hoops.com Top 25 Poll in #15 Scranton (53-67), #16 Chicago (77-82) and #17 Illinois Wesleyan (81-88). 
  • The Thunder currently lead all NCAA Division III Women's Basketball teams in blocked shots (162) and blocked shots per game (8.5). They pace all CCIW teams in fewest fouls (264), fewest turnovers (260), field-goal percentage defense (34.8), offensive rebounds per game (14), rebounds (806), rebounds per game (42.42) and scoring defense (57.5).
  • Two-time CCIW Player of the Week selection Hannah Frazier leads Wheaton with 15.4 points per game. The sophomore scored 24 points in their 72-59 win over Carthage on January 4.
  • Millikin, who faces Elmhurst on January 31, is in the midst of a seven-game losing skid. Their last victory occurred in an 85-67 decision over Illinois College on December 30. 
  • The Big Blue's .745 (245-329) free throw percentage commands all CCIW teams. Devin Curry leads the CCIW and ranks fifth in the country with a .921 (58-63) free throw percentage. Carthage kept Curry away from the free throw line in their 74-51 win over the Big Blue on January 20.

THE COACHES

  • Kent Madsen (163-47) is in his eighth season as Wheaton head women's basketball coach.
  • The 2017-18 season is Lori Keran's (553-272) 32nd as Millikin head women's basketball coach. 

THE SERIES

  • The Lady Reds are 27-51 all-time against Wheaton.
  • Carthage owns a 26-38 all-time mark against Millikin. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Lady Reds pushed their win streak to six games with a 77-51 victory over North Park University on January 24, and an 80-74 decision over Augustana College on January 27. Both victories resulted in season-sweeps over North Park and Augustana. 
  • Madie Kaelber paced Carthage last week with 19 points in each game. She capped the week in style with 14 fourth-quarter points in the victory over Augustana. Rachel Szydlowski recorded a double-double in the contest with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Harris contributed her 17th career double-double against Augustana with 11 points and 10 rebounds.


THE LADY REDS ARE....

5-0 when they shoot .450 or better from the field.

10-0 when they hold opponents to less than 60 points.

12-1 when they lead at halftime. 

10-2 when they score first. 

14-2 when leading with 2:00 remaining.

STREAKING

The Lady Reds' six-game win streak marks their longest since 2013-14, when they strung a program-record 13 victories together. 

NOTABLE NCAA/CCIW RANKINGS (1/31)

The Lady Reds lead the CCIW in defensive rebounds per game (30.0), fewest turnovers (260), three-point field goals made (156), three-point field goals per game (8.2) and three-point field goal percentage (.371). Bailey Gilbert leads the CCIW and ranks 24th in the country with a .429 three-point field goal percentage. Morgan Harris (644:00) and Gilbert (639:00) sit atop the CCIW in minutes played. 

CALLING ALL ALUMNI

Alumni Day for the Carthage College men's and women's basketball teams is set for Saturday, February 3, in conjunction with the doubleheader against Millikin at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The women's alumni game at Tarble Arena is set for 2:00 p.m., with the men's contest to follow at 3:00 p.m. 

KEEPING IT CLOSE

Four of the Lady Reds' five losses this season came within 10 points. The only exception occurred in a 72-59 loss to Wheaton College (Ill.) on January 4.

MILESTONE WATCH

Bailey Gilbert, who owns 164 career three pointers, is in fourth place on the Carthage all-time three-point field goal list. Haley Stercic (2011-14) holds the Lady Reds career record for most three-point field goals with 202. Gilbert's .397 (164-413) career three-point field goal percentage currently ranks fourth on the Lady Reds all-time list. Morgan Harris, who has 922 career points, currently ranks third on the Carthage all-time free-throw percentage list with a .787 (262-330) figure.
